Choosing the colour is the part of a flooring project that people lose the most sleep over, and it is the part that photos online are worst at helping with. Screen calibration, staged lighting and a wide-angle lens can make the same plank look like three different floors.
So here is a plain guide to the wood tones we actually keep in stock at our Pace warehouse, what each one does in a real Florida room, and who tends to pick it. Every photo below is one of our own floors, not a manufacturer render.
First, two rules that matter more than the colour itself
Look at it in your own light. Panhandle homes get intense, warm afternoon light through west-facing windows and cool grey light on a summer storm day. A plank that looks perfectly neutral under showroom LEDs can read distinctly yellow or distinctly grey at home. Take a sample. Put it on the floor. Look at it at 9am and again at 5pm.
Contrast with the cabinets, not with the walls. Walls get repainted. Cabinets do not. The relationship you have to live with is floor-to-cabinet, and the safest results come from either a clear step in value between them or a deliberate, close match — the awkward zone is a near-miss.
White Birch — the lightest tone we stock
Very light, cool-leaning, with soft grain. This is the one that makes a small room read bigger and a dark hallway read brighter, which is why it does well in condos and in older Milton and Pensacola houses with modest ceiling heights.
Best with: white or grey shaker cabinets, black hardware, coastal palettes. Watch out for: it shows dust and dog hair sooner than a mid tone, so it suits households that vacuum often more than households that do not.
Honey — warm, bright and forgiving
Honey is the middle of the road in the best sense. Warm without being orange, light enough to keep a kitchen bright, and busy enough in the grain that it hides crumbs and sand between cleanings. It is one of our most popular kitchen choices.
Best with: cream and off-white cabinets, natural wood accents, brushed nickel or brass. Watch out for: it fights with strongly pink or peach tile, which still turns up in Panhandle bathrooms from the eighties.
Medium Oak — the safe neutral
If you asked us to pick one colour for a house you were about to rent out or sell, this is it. Medium Oak is the tone nobody objects to. It photographs well for listings, works with almost any cabinet colour, and does not date the way strong greys did.
Best with: literally most things. Watch out for: nothing much, which is exactly the point.
Pecan — warm brown with real depth
Deeper and richer than Honey, with more variation plank to plank. Pecan brings warmth into rooms that get a lot of cool northern light, and it looks considerably more expensive than it costs, which is always a nice trick.
Best with: cream cabinets, warm whites, traditional trim. Watch out for: pairing it with very dark cabinets, where the whole room can go heavy.
Driftwood — the grey wood look, done properly
Weathered, greyed and low-contrast. Grey flooring got overexposed a few years ago and a lot of it was too blue; this one keeps a wood tone underneath, which is why it still looks current. Practically speaking it is the best colour we sell for hiding sand and pet hair, which matters a lot within a few miles of the water.
Best with: white cabinets, black or matte fixtures, cool coastal palettes. Watch out for: warm oak trim and warm-toned granite, which can make the grey read cold and bluish by comparison.
Dockside — coastal, cool and a little more character
Dockside is our driftwood-toned coastal look with more visible grain and colour movement. It has personality, which is a plus in an entry or a hallway and something to think about in a small room where a busy floor can feel restless.
Best with: white trim, beachy furnishings, rattan and linen. Watch out for: rooms that already have a lot of pattern in the tile or countertops.
Willow — mid-tone, contemporary, hard-wearing
Willow has been our quiet favourite this year. It sits between Medium Oak and Driftwood, so it reads modern without committing to grey, and the Signature construction it comes in carries a 24 mil wear layer, which is the spec we would want in a busy household or a rental.
Best with: greige and white cabinets, mixed metals, transitional interiors. Watch out for: very little — this is the one we most often end up recommending to people who cannot decide.
How to narrow it down without agonising
- Decide light, mid or dark first. That single decision eliminates two-thirds of the options.
- Then decide warm or cool, using your cabinets as the reference point.
- Take home two samples, not six. More than two and people stop being able to see the difference.
- Check them against your countertop and your cabinet door, on the floor, in daylight.
- Ask what wear layer each candidate has. A colour you love in a construction that is too thin is a bad trade — here is what to watch for.
