Recently, I was chatting with someone about the luxury vinyl plank (LVP) flooring we sell. As expected, the topic of pricing came up. I shared our price, and they quickly pointed out that a well-known big box store had vinyl plank flooring for a similar cost.
Curious, I went to check it out myself. Sure enough, they had LVP at about the same price as us…
Except it wasn’t the same quality.
And they didn’t have it in stock.
And when I clicked on a color I actually liked, the price jumped.
It just goes to show: don’t just look at the price they advertise—look at everything. Not all luxury vinyl plank flooring is the same. That’s why it’s important to research before you buy.
If you’re shopping for vinyl plank flooring, here are a few key things to watch for:
1) Is the product actually in stock?
Stores love to list prices for products they usually carry, but that doesn’t mean they have them right now. Always check availability before making a decision.
2) How much is in stock?
Let’s say you find the perfect style and specs—do they have enough for your project? Will you have to order more? Will it still be available later?
3) Is the color you love actually at the price you love?
When you search for “LVP” or “vinyl plank flooring,” stores will highlight the cheapest price. But as you start clicking on styles you like, watch how quickly the price per square foot changes. That great deal might not apply to the color you want.
4) Is it a closeout?
Sales on closeout items are common—stores need to move inventory they’re not keeping in stock anymore. We do it too!!! If they have enough for your space (plus an extra 5-10% for waste), great! But if you run short or want to extend into another room later, you might be out of luck. I always hold back a few boxes with your name on it until you let me know you have completed your project. Also, I suggest getting extra because I will take back unopened boxes for a full refund!
5) What are the specs?
- Is it glue-down, loose-lay, or click-lock?
- How thick is it?
- What’s the wear layer?
- Does it come with a warranty?
- Do you need additional materials?
Not all LVP is built the same. Some are thinner, less durable, or require extra steps (and extra money) to install. A cheaper option today could end up costing you more in repairs and replacements down the road.
5) What about Customer Service?
When starting a new project you WILL have questions! For the most part the employees at your big box stores probably don’t know all the specifics on LVP. I mean, how could they? They have tons of different products that they sell so that would be humanly impossible!!! But at Case Flooring we only offer LVP so we pride ourselves in learning as much about our product and the specifics that we can as well as passing that knowledge to our customers.
Final Thoughts
I get it—money is tight, and everyone wants the best deal. That’s exactly why you need to look beyond the sticker price. You might feel good about a “deal” now, but regret it later when the product doesn’t hold up.
